Meet Damon.
A fisherman, luremaker, musician, and documentary filmmaker, Damon started his channel after a long series of events that culminated with a new way for him to be a true story teller.
We had a chance to talk to Damon and learn a bit more about his life as a creator.
Tell us a bit more about your channel.
Sort of Bob Ross meets Jacques Cousteau. My goal is to help people catch a boat load of fish without spending a boat load of cash. I also want to show the joy and beauty of God’s creation. In the end, it’s all about storytelling. The whole channel is one long, ever unfolding story.
Why did you become a creator?
Well, I hold two degrees in music performance, so I’ve been a creator in one genre or another since my teenage years. The inspiration for my current channel came after my dad died in 2007. Dad taught me to fish and run the river. That’s when I started fishing again, and making lures and other fishing tackle. Turns out the tackle I make caught fish! Started selling them on eBay and on fishing forums I was a part of. It wasn’t long before people started buying and asking how to rig and use the tackle. Well, 2014 I started the fishing YouTube channel, and here I am today.
Where do you get inspiration for your videos?
Documentary film. I have loved watching National Geographic, Mutual of Omaha, Nature, Jacques Cousteau since I was a kid. I still watch lots of documentary films. I want all my content to unfold as a documentary film. I also find inspiration while reading books about filmmaking and storytelling.
Who are some of your favorite YouTube creators?
Honestly, I don’t have a favorite YouTuber. I watch real films. Guys like Bob Ross and Jacques Cousteau were doing the YouTube thing long before the internet was invented. People are too wrapped up in YouTube itself. They fail to realize there is a whole universe of motion picture to study and glean.
For me it’s favorite artists, filmmakers and creators across a couple genres:
Music: Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Hans Zimmer, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Yellowjackets, Weather Report, most any Medieval music up to about the Renaissance.
Film: Cousteau, every NatGeo ever, loved Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Christopher Nolan, Hitchcock, Herzog, Ken Burns
What one piece advice would you give to your fellow creators?
Study filmmaking and TV production. Watch lots of movies. Stop being a YouTuber and learn about motion picture.
